Background & History
Making a difference
For over 60 years, our vibrant community centre has been bringing people together in the heart of Westminster with cultural, social, educational and recreational activities. Our inclusive centre is a space that welcomes lifelong Westminster residents and those who've recently arrived in the area.
The Abbey Community Association was originally formed in July 1948 to build on the sense of community that emerged during the Second World War. In 1992 The Abbey Centre moved to The Old Wash House & Baths in Great Smith Street, the site of Westminster's first public baths and wash house. In those days locals came to clean and for a dip in the fantastic pool built in 1850. Today locals come to The Abbey Centre for activities and events: last year 18,875 people attended regular activities here, with 1,559 attending one-off events. The pool is long gone, but visitors can still admire Henry Poole's handsome sculpted bathers on the building's facade.
London has a great history of social activism, and we've decided to re-name The Abbey Centre's rooms in honour of social reformers who championed the rights of London's marginalised and disadvantaged people. We aim to carry on their work: to serve our local residents and to bring together our ever-evolving and diverse community. Over The Abbey Centre's five floors, we offer a diverse range of activities and opportunities for local people. Volunteer or become a member today.
The Team
The Abbey Centre is all about people, so it's no surprise we have a friendly and vibrant team.
- Vision: To be the vibrant, healthy heart of Westminster
- Mission: To improve the lives, health and opportunities of the people of south Westminster
Chair's report 2008/9
I am happy to report that the Abbey Community Association has had another successful year. There are many measures of success and, for us, the highest measure of success rests with local people who come to Abbey centre to take part in the many activities and projects managed by us or hosted at the Centre.
During 2008-9, over 20,000 local people came to the Abbey Centre. Most of the visits were to attend the many regular and one-off activities run by at the Abbey Centre; many also came to have lunch in our newly redecorated café or just to meet friends in the Abbey Centre's welcoming environment.. Every visit is valued by Abbey staff, volunteers and Board members.
