How We Help

Our Community

"Responding to a diverse community's needs"

South Westminster is a truly diverse area with a vibrant community of around 40,000 people. 150 languages are spoken in schools within the area as well as the whole spectrum of religious belief being represented; from the Baha'i, the Hindu, the Jain, the Jewish, the Muslim, the Sikh and the Zoroastrian through to the many Christian denominations.

The Abbey Centre is at the heart of these communities of people, interests and faith. We endeavour to represent this in our work.

Ethel has lived in South Westminster all her life, but after her husband died did not get out much. Her GP told her about the Abbey and Ethel began coming to Tai Chi Classes for Over 50s. Since then she has joined our sewing class and also our summer outings for seniors, providing her with regular activities three days a week.

Maria, originally from Spain, wanted to help her children reach key stage 2 targets at school. She and other Spanish-speaking parents approached the Centre; we provided space and raised funds for tutors while the parents organised classes.

The women-only exercise class for Arabic speakers also provided a children's crèche, enabling young mothers who might not otherwise be able to exercise to keep fit and meet other Arabic speakers.

These are just a few of the many examples of those who benefit from the Abbey Centre’s services each week. And for each of them, the Abbey plays a different but crucial role in keeping them connected with the community.
