Westminster Abbey

abbey2200Every year over a million visitors step inside this grand abbey, whose history spans more than 1000 years. The present church (begun by Henry III in 1245) is one of the most important Gothic buildings in Britain and home to paintings, stained glass and interesting artefacts. Many famous people are buried here, including Chaucer, Charles Dickens, Sir Isaac Newton and Laurence Olivier. Tour the building or attend the daily services.

Houses of Parliament

bigbennight200The Palace of Westminster (also known as the Houses of Parliament) is home to the House of Commons and the House of Lords. UK residents can watch laws being made and watch debates in both Houses by visiting the public galleries when Parliament is in session. To watch Prime Minister's Question Time you need to get tickets from your MP or a Lord.

In August and September, visit Buckingham Palace and admire the lavishly decorated State Rooms, adorned with paintings by Rembrandt, Rubens, Vermeer and Canaletto.
