Our volunteers now make up more than a third of our staff team

Volunteers play an essential role in supporting our charity’s work, and they now make up an essential part of our staff team too.

We’ve found that now over a third of our current staff were employed after starting out as volunteers at our centre.

Our amazing volunteers support so many of our projects and services, and now former volunteers can be found working across all of our departments: café, finance, fundraising – even the Communications Officer writing this story first came to the Abbey Centre as a volunteer.

Finding so many successful candidates for these roles among our volunteers really highlights the incredible value that our volunteers bring to our team. We’re delighted when we’re able to give something back to our dedicated volunteers by offering them a paid position.

Volunteering shows some of the best qualities in people, proving that they’re keen to help out. It also gives an opportunity to show your talents to a potential employer. This is especially useful if you don’t have a lot of work experience, or if you find it difficult to put your unique skills and talents into words when applying for jobs.

There’s no guarantee that a suitable role will come up while you’re volunteering at our centre, which is part of why this statistic stands out to us. But volunteering is a great experience which you can add to your CV, and we’ll be happy to provide a reference to back you up when you’re ready to apply for other jobs.

This is just one of the many benefits of volunteering! You’ll meet some of the most wonderful, kind and caring people you can find. And of course, it’s a brilliant way to help others and give back to the community, as you’ll be making a real difference in the lives of the people who need it most.

Become a volunteer

We’re always seeking volunteers to support our projects, such as providing affordable food at our Community Pantry or supporting our Young at Heart social groups for over 50s.
